Unclean To Green Skincare Swap

header.jpg

I am so fortunate to be able to share my passion for green beauty and living with a few of my closest friends. When my friend Corinne asked to collaborate on this article together, I jumped right on the idea because it will benefit you all to hear about her experience with products in addition to mine. I think adding another perspective is always great when it comes to suggestions because what works for some doesn’t always work for others!

Below is the first installment in our Unclean to Green Skincare Swap where we both share what we used to use (and cringe a little) and then share what we are using now! You’ll notice that we are still on some journeys to find our holy grail products, so if you have any suggestions feel free to help us out!

Deodorant

Emily – Dove go fresh Cool Essentials to Schmidt’s Bergamont and Lime

Edeo

Deodorant is one of the hardest things to find a green beauty match for in my experience. I have to admit I still have not found one that I LOVE because all of the good ones tend to be in jars, and I just can’t seem to get into the idea of using my fingers to apply deodorant. Right now I am using Scmidts Bergamont and Lime in the stick form. The scent is so fresh, which is what I loved about my Dove. I really really was digging it at first and thought I had found *the one*, but in the past week my armpits have felt itchy and raw – the dreaded reaction to baking soda that haunts every green-deodorant user’s dreams. So, I am open to suggestions on this one peeps!

Corinne – Old Spice Pure Sport to Bare Bones

Cdeo

I’ll be honest — I loved my Old Spice deodorant. You’re probably thinking “Why would you ever use a men’s deodorant, Corinne?” Well, because it works! My boyfriend uses Old Spice and he always smelling fresh! But now that I’m on this whole green beauty kick, I had to kick my Old Spice to the curb and try something new. I’m currently using Bare Bones Deodorant in Cedarwood scent. I absolutely love the story behind this brand. It was started by a girl who was tired of all the chemical crap (preach!) in beauty products and started experimenting right in her own kitchen to develop non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty free products. This deodorant smells great and goes on softly, but you really have to let it dry before putting on your clothes! (I learned this the hard way.) Since it’s made with wonderful organic oils like coconut (sorry Em!), essential lemon, and tea tree, it’s, how do I say this … oily! So just be sure to let it dry! I’ll keep testing it out for a while to see if it can handle all my physical activity, but for now it’s treating me well.

Toothpaste

Emily – Colgate to Kiss My Face an Earth Paste

Etp

Toothpaste is another one people have a hard time transitioning to – we don’t like to have B.O. and we don’t like to have bad breath, so I can’t blame anyone who is hesitant. I will say that my boyfriend was worried about the switch and has been a repeat buyer of the Kiss My Face for a while now! He actually stopped using it a few weeks ago and was using some leftover Colgate because he ran out and I could notice a (negative) difference in his breath. I use Kiss My Face in the morning because it leaves that minty fresh feeling you want before heading to work, but I will use Earth Paste at night because even though it doesn’t leave me minty, it does leave my mouth feeling clean and has a wonderfully pure formula without carrageenan, which I like to avoid if I can.

Corinne – Sensodyne  to Nature’s Gate

Ctp

Toothpaste and I go waaaaaay back. Last year around Christmas time my mom and I both developed a red rash around our lips and we eventually figured out that we were both allergic to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which is in nearly every toothpaste and beauty product on the market. This was my first experience like this and really opened my eyes to the potentially harmful effects of the chemicals contained in products. So we were both forced to find something new. I found safety in Sensodye Pronamel which, while SLS free, is not a natural product by any means, and my mom discovered Nature’s Gate and now we’re both converted! Nature’s Gate is non-GMO, vegan, paraben free, cruelty free, and the list goes on and on. Big bonus, it’s also made in the USA! Score! The consistency of Nature’s Gate is a little different compared to normal toothpaste, but it’s something I quickly got used to. I definitely recommend this one!

(P.S. I also use Tom’s of Maine toothpaste every now and then and I like it too!)

Face Lotion

Emily – Cetaphil Derma Control to 100% Pure Green Tea Oil Free Hydration

Efm

Ahh Cetaphil, cult classic, wonder product for acne and sensitive skin … literally made with no ingredient I can pronounce. I miss you dearly, but at the same time, I really don’t. Right now I am using the 100% Pure Oil Free Face Moisturizer and I mix it with their Vitamin C Serum every morning. It creates a perfect base for my makeup, has no coconut oil, has SPF, and has all ingredients I recognize and love – winner winner chicken dinner. I only use it in the morning because I use oils at night for moisturization. Still open to suggestions on this one because without mixing it with the Vitamin C Serum, I’m not sure it would be moisturizing enough. (I bought the Vit C Serum during their Black Friday sale for $10 but would not pay full price for it – just haven’t noticed it doing anything special for my skintone.)

Corinne – Clinique Dramatically Different to Andalou Day Cream

Cfacelotion

I was not a fan of Clinique’s Dramatically Different moisturizer, but I found that I kept using it because my mom would get it in her annual Clinique Bonus bag and I’d swoop it up. It left my face feeling dry and itchy and made me feel dramatically different, but not in a good way. But a week or so ago, Emily and I both hit the jackpot when we won an Andalou Insta giveaway and scored a ton of wonderful products! One of which was the 1,000 Roses Beautiful Day Cream. I LOVE this product, and I don’t throw my love around lightly. I put it on right after I get out of the shower and it leaves my skin feeling fresh and hydrated and ready to tackle the day. It has a light, yet heavenly, smell of fresh roses and pomegranate and I find that I don’t have to use a lot to cover my entire face and neck. It’s just what the doctor ordered for my parched winter skin because it’s made to rescue sensitive and dry skin by boosting cell vitality and reviving the skin’s hydro-lipid layer. It also comes in an adorable little pink jar, which is totally reusable, yay! This product gets a major double thumbs up.

Face Wash

Emily – Cetaphil DermaControl to Blissoma Free Rejuvenating Herbal Cleanser

efw

Noticing a trend here? I was a Cetaphil groupie and so was my sister – our derm had us convinced this stuff was the only way to go in terms of healing our acne. When my acne breaks out I am not gonna lie people — I am tempted to get in my car and go get this stuff right away. But, then I look at the ingredients and am quickly reminded that there is nothing good about it. Right now I am using Blissoma’s Free Cleanser and Makeup Remover. I love it because it really does get my face clean, and remove my makeup, and what little coconut derivatives it does contains don’t seem to irritate my face. The price point was something I was willing to pay when I was desperately searching for anything to help my acne … but not so much (at all) anymore. This is one I am looking to replace with something different and cheaper when it runs out. Suggestions?

Corinne – St. Ives Nourished and Smooth Oatmeal Scrub & Mask to Acure Sensitive Skin

Cfw

Once upon a time I was a naive shopper, scanning the shelves of CVS looking for a nice face wash. I was admittedly fooled by St. Ives and their packaging that exclaimed they were “Hypo-Allergenic” and “Paraben Free”! I thought it sounded like a solid choice but with a Skin Deep score of 9 and off the charts Developmental & Reproductive toxicity levels, I quickly knew I needed to replace this one. And so, I replaced it with something from my absolute favorite beauty brand, Acure. I love Acure because they are reasonably priced, made in the USA, and 100% biodegradable! I’m an environmental nerd, a tree-hugger if you will, and I love natural products that are not only good for you, but are also environmentally conscious. I use their smooth and creamy Sensitive Facial Cleanser, and it’s gentle formula of organic argan oil, peony stem cells, and sunflower amino acids really works.

Acne Treatment

Emily – Clean and Clear – Andalou Naturals and Moss Skincare

Est

Guys, I remember my first HUGE hormonal pimple when I was in middle school. I remember I was home from school because I had such bad cramps so I was able to literally apply this Clean and Clear constantly, thinking that the 3rd, 4th, or 5th application would be the one to ZAP it away. I quickly discovered acne does not work like that and is not something a bandaid can fix, but something with a root cause. Since then I have searched for products that help alleviate the pressure of the acne or help with redness rather than miracle products that will remove it overnight. Budget buy? Andalou Naturals. Splurge? MOSS Skincare Zen Physic (see my favorites post for why I am loving Zen Physic!).

Corinne – Proactiv Spot Treatment to Juice Beauty

Cst

We’ve all seen the Proactiv commercials that rant and rave about how awesome and effective their product is, but for me it wasn’t. I bought the entire set back in high school and the formula was way too harsh for my skin. It was very painful and strong so I unfortunately didn’t have the miracle story that the actors in the commercials make you believe. I kept the spot treatment for times of need but I never really found that it did very much for my problem areas. Fortunately, since being on birth control, the frequency at which my acne appears has decreased dramatically. But for the times when I’m stressed or near that time of the month, Juice Beauty’s roll-on Blemish Be Gone treatment is the best. The ball applicator is super convenient and I’d say it’s pretty effective. It’s now definitely my go-to spot treatment! I also really like the branding of this company. It’s simple yet effective. I do recognize that this product is on the more expensive side but wait for a sale (like I did) and snatch this one up because you can trust it and it will last you a good while.

In Part II we will feature shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, dry shampoo, and exfoliant. Anything else you all want to see our swaps for?

As always, thanks for reading!

  1. These are some great suggestions! A few more you may be interesting in trying is Davids Natural Toothpaste and Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve lotion and face lotion (both all-natural, cruelty-free, and plastic-free packaging!)

  2. I have seen David’s quite a bit and want to try it once my Earth Paste runs out! I’ll have to check Chagrin Valley out 🙂
