I want to start off this post by saying please give it a chance even if essential oils seem too ‘granola’ or ‘hippy dippy’ for you. Essential oils are in essence scent compounds found within various parts of a plant that have known therapeutic effects.
Just like you’d eat different foods to get different nutrients and effects, essential oils provide the same variety.
They are nature’s candle. They can be nature’s sleeping pill. And lately they have become my PMS relief and digestion relief. (We all got issues y’all).
Another post for another time but most candles are not the best – and believe me that is hard for me to admit because, ask Nick, I am a candle ADDICT. Lately, I have been trying to use my diffuser more because not only does it make my house smell amazing (boy stank and dog stank be gone) BUT I can choose an oil based on a mood I want to heighten or a mood I want to calm. It’s double duty.
The price on oils varies, but good quality oils are priceless (lol could I sound more cliche). The effects are stronger, the oil is healthier for your skin, and the harvesting is better for the environment. If you are using 1-2 drops of the oils to diffuse, they last a very long time so I find the price to be worth it! I am not one to spend a ton of money on crap and I don’t feel guilty when I buy oils.
You can easily Google the wonderful effects of these oils, and so many brands have great education. So, I don’t want to bore the crap out of you guys – I wanted this to be more of a dialogue with specific uses I have found than a list of benefits. I have another post for those of you that are interested that breaks down benefits by specific oils.
Citrus Essential Oils for that Good Clean Feeling:
When the house feels dirty and the air feels stale and I get that feeling of ‘holy shit if the house isn’t clean in the next 30 seconds, I’m gonna lose it’ – citrus is my answer. Lemon essential oil is a classic, but grapefruit is my current favorite. I’ve heard orange is pretty dope too! Citrus essential oils are also great for using with vinegar and water as a natural cleaning agent. I love to mop my floor with it because I don’t feel guilty if the dog licks some dropped food up (clutzo here). Not only is the citrus smell very clean and crisp, but many citrus essential oils (especially Lemon and Grapefruit) have anti-bacterial properties.
Let’s Talk Essential Oils For Mood:
I will be the first to admit it, I am a moody bitch sometimes. I have the tendency to hold my emotions in when I am out of the house, with friends, and at work. But, I wear my emotions on my sleeve big time when I step through the front door and am around people that I am most comfortable with. I know a lot of you ended up here the same way or are working on it, whether it be anxiety, hormonal issues, etc. If you aren’t struggling with those things, hellloo you are still human, you get moody and can be a little shit too.
Essential oils are SO great for curing “little shit syndrome.” Lavender, citrus, chamomile … the list of mood enhancing oils is endless AND so many companies have wonderful blends for just that. If diffusing isn’t for you, there are roll ons and bath salt blends – the options are there for you! (Throw a little Epsom Salt in the bath with a drop of your favorite EO and boom – calming me-time!)
Obviously it isn’t a cure, but sitting with my diffuser or my essential oil bath and taking a deep breath is my reset at the end of the day. When I walk in the door I like to do this as soon as possible so I can cleanse any negative energy I have pent up and enjoy my evening to the fullest.
It goes both ways though! As a highly sensitive person (HSP) when I am happy or excited I FEEL IT. And I mean I really feel it. And it is great and such a silver lining, but it means I can have a hard time settling down at times. If you’re having a hard time focusing and feel scatter brained or all over the damn place, I’ve found eucalyptus essential oil helps me concentrate and allows me to bring my attention to one thing. It is great for students or to diffuse during homework for kids!
Essential Oil Benefits through Application:
So ya girl gets really bad cramps and because issues with stress and anxiety, I have chronic constipation. You’re welcome for sharing – we all have our issues peeps and if this can help one of you with the same issue then it was worth the oversharing! Anyways, I have been searching and searching for something to help with both of these issues. I’ve made adjustments to diet, exercise, supplements, for both that have helped but there are still days that I struggle and need a little something extra. I decided to try essential oil application and get a blend specifically for PMS and cramps and one just for digestive issues. I will keep you all updated on how I find these to work – but from what I have read it does really help some folks.
When you apply essential oils to the skin PLEASE use a carrier oil. Essential oils are very strong concentrations, which can irritate the skin if not diluted. Carrier oils are oils that are thicker in consistency: coconut oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil, jojoba oil, etc. Different oils are more suitable for different skin types – I have sensitive, acne prone skin so I use grape seed oil which is pretty lite. If you’re skin isn’t as sensitive you can probably choose a cheaper option that works just as well! Another post for another time on that too.
Ingesting Essential Oils?
So I know a lot of people that ingest essential oils for various ailments – usually dropped in water. I do not do this myself, I stick to aromatherapy and skin application only. That is not to say that others don’t do it and have great results. Just like anything, do your research and decide what is best for you when using oils!
